Software Engineer – Backend (Java / Spring Boot)

Location: Trivandrum, Kerala (work from office)

About the role
Edstem Technologies is looking for backend Software Engineers to build and scale high-quality web applications using Java and Spring Boot. You'll work closely with product, frontend and QA teams to design, build and run services in production. AI-assisted development with Claude is part of how we work every day, so you'll be expected to use it as a core part of your engineering workflow.

Key responsibilities
Design, build and maintain backend services and RESTful APIs using Java and Spring Boot
Contribute to a microservices architecture, from service design through deployment and support
Use Claude (Claude Code or the Claude app) to speed up coding, refactoring, debugging, test writing and documentation, while staying responsible for the quality and correctness of the code
Write clean, efficient, well-tested and well-documented code
Design database schemas and write efficient SQL queries and ORM mappings
Optimize applications for performance, scalability and reliability
Apply security best practices and keep dependencies, frameworks and patches up to date
Participate in code reviews, including reviews of AI-generated code, and give constructive feedback
Work with team members on technical design and solution architecture
Keep up with emerging backend technologies and AI-assisted development practices

Required skills and experience
3–7 years of backend development experience, with at least 3 years in Spring Boot
Strong proficiency in Java and object-oriented programming
Hands-on experience with Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Data JPA / Hibernate and related frameworks
Solid experience building RESTful APIs and working with microservices
Good knowledge of relational database design and SQL (PostgreSQL / MySQL or similar)
Hands-on experience coding with Claude, such as generating and refactoring code, writing tests, debugging and reviewing output critically
Experience with Git and collaborative development workflows (pull requests, branching)
Familiarity with unit and integration testing (JUnit, Mockito)
Basic understanding of front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript)
Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills

Good to have
Experience with Docker, Kubernetes or a cloud platform (AWS / Azure / GCP)
Exposure to messaging systems such as Kafka or RabbitMQ
Experience with CI/CD pipelines
Experience with prompt engineering, Claude Code workflows or integrating LLM APIs into applications

Education
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field

Location and language
Candidates from Kerala are strongly preferred
Must be able to work from Trivandrum
Strong English communication skills, along with fluency in Malayalam (spoken) is preferred.
