Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced Backend Engineer to design, develop, test and maintain secure, scalable and reliable backend services and APIs for a financial services project.

The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience in Java and Spring Boot, along with a solid understanding of PostgreSQL, RESTful APIs, distributed systems, cloud-native architectures and secure software development practices.

This role involves end-to-end ownership of backend services, including business logic, data persistence, third-party integrations, asynchronous workflows, production monitoring and system reliability.

Key Responsibilities

Design, develop, test and maintain production-grade backend services primarily using Java 21+ and Spring Boot.

Build secure, scalable and well-documented RESTful APIs and event-driven interfaces.

Design and manage transactional data models using PostgreSQL, including schema design, database migrations, constraints, indexing and query optimisation.

Integrate external platforms and government services, implementing appropriate authentication, idempotency, timeout handling, retries, reconciliation and audit mechanisms.

Work with object storage, key-value stores and caching solutions, ensuring appropriate data consistency, access control and lifecycle management.

Implement secure coding practices, input validation, authentication, authorisation, secrets management and protection of sensitive information.

Develop and maintain comprehensive unit, integration, contract and performance tests.

Implement observability through structured logging, metrics, distributed tracing, alerts and application health checks.

Contribute to containerisation, CI/CD pipelines, deployment configurations and production support.

Participate in incident investigation, troubleshooting and resolution to ensure service availability and reliability.

Maintain technical documentation, including architecture decision records, API specifications, deployment guides and operational runbooks.

Required Technical Skills

Strong hands-on production experience with Java 21 or a recent modern version of Java, with the ability to work with a Java 21+ project baseline.

Solid experience with Spring Framework and Spring Boot.

Strong understanding of HTTP, REST APIs, JSON, OpenAPI specifications and API versioning.

Proficiency in PostgreSQL, including SQL, relational schema design, transactions, indexing and database migrations.

Good understanding of secure software development, authentication, authorisation and secrets management.

Experience in writing automated unit and integration tests.

Familiarity with containerisation technologies and CI/CD practices.

Ability to troubleshoot production issues using logs, metrics and distributed traces.

Strong understanding of distributed systems, including concurrency, failure handling, idempotency and data consistency.

Great to have

Experience with one or more of the following languages and frameworks will be an added advantage:

Kotlin with Ktor or Micronaut.

Python with FastAPI.

TypeScript with Express.

Event-driven architectures, message brokers and asynchronous processing.

OpenAPI code generation and consumer-driven contract testing.

Cloud, Infrastructure & Platform Awareness

The candidate should have a working understanding of modern cloud-native architectures and the infrastructure required to deploy and operate microservices.

Relevant exposure includes:

Container orchestration and cloud-based application hosting.

Managed databases, caching solutions and object storage services.

Networking concepts, private networks, API gateways and load balancers.

Identity and access management, network access controls (ACLs) and secrets management.

Observability platforms, monitoring, alerting and distributed tracing.

CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation and artifact management.

The candidate should be capable of understanding and tracing an end-to-end service request, from the load balancer and API gateway through private networks to backend services, caches, databases or object storage, and subsequently to application logs, metrics and alerts. An understanding of the availability, consistency, access patterns and operational considerations of managed PostgreSQL databases, caching services and object storage is expected.

Experience Requirements

Recommended experience: 4–7 years of professional experience in backend or full-stack software development.

Demonstrated experience building, deploying and supporting production-grade backend applications.

Experience working on financial services, enterprise applications or regulated technology environments will be an advantage.
